Korea Updates Hazard Assessment Results of Chemicals Registered under K-REACH (Updated on June 28, 2024)

12 assessed chemicals are expected to be designated as toxic chemicals and subject to certain control within South Korea.

Updates:

On June 28, 2024, by NCIS Announcement No. 2024-32, South Korea’s National Institute of Chemical Safety (NICS) announced the adoption of proposed updates to the hazardous assessment results of chemicals registered under K-REACH, which took effect immediately.

Notably, according to the hazard assessment results of 37 previously registered new chemical substances (Given No. 2024.1 ~ 2024.37) and 20 previously registered existing chemical substances (Given No. 2024-443 ~ 2024-462), 2 new substances and 10 existing substances are found to be toxic. These 12 substances are expected to be designated as toxic chemicals and subject to certain control within South Korea in the future.

Previous article (June 5, 2024):

By NICS Notice No. 2024-45, South Korea’s National Institute of Chemical Safety (NICS) is now soliciting public comments on the hazard evaluation results of existing and new chemical substances registered under K-REACH. These registered and assessed substances were issued with English names, CAS No., corresponding hazards, classification and labeling information, as well as the determination of whether it is classified as toxic chemical. Any comments are welcome before June 24, 2024.

Proposed updates to Annex 1 – New Chemical Substances Hazard Assessments Results

  • To add hazard assessment results of 37 new chemical substances (Given No. 2024.1 ~ 2024.37) that were registered and reviewed under K-REACH from September to November of 2023, of which two substances are toxic; and

  • To delete one chemical substance (Given No. 2016-951) from Annex 1 due to duplication with an existing chemical substance (which is toxic, i.e., Given No. 2017-1-762) in Annex 2.

  • To delete one chemical substance (Given No. 2018-149) from Annex 1 due to duplication with another chemical (Given No. 2023-20) in Annex 1.

  • To update chemical names and hazard information of 30 previously registered new chemical substances.

Proposed updates to Annex 2 – Existing Chemical Substances Hazard Assessments Results

  • To add hazard assessment results of 20 previously registered existing chemical substances (Given No. 2024-443 ~ 2024-462), 10 of which are found toxic.

  • To update the hazard information of one chemical substance (Given No. 2023-408);

  • To add the unique numbers assigned for 35 toxic chemical substances (see figure below).
