Updates: On December 20, 2022, by MoE Announcement No.2022-248, South Korea's Ministry of Environment (MoE) adopted the proposal of the postponement of new restictions for a chromium (6+) compound – strontium chromate (CAS No.7789-06-2). They will apply from January 1, 2025.

South Korea’s Ministry of Environment (MoE) is consulting until December 4, 2022 on a draft amendment to the Restricted Chemical Substances List by MoE Notice No. 2022-627. As proposed, the ministry will delay the implementation date of the new restrictions for a chromium (6+) compound – strontium chromate (CAS No.7789-06-2).
Chromium Restrictions
Updated by MoE Announcement No.2021-295 on December 29, 2021, Chromium(6+) compounds and mixtures containing 0.1% or more thereof (Given No.06-5-10) will be prohibited from use in (1) anti-corrosion coating for water tanks and (2) all coatings except for some special applications such as in aircraft, military supplies, etc. Previously the restriction applied only to (1) anti-corrosion coating for water tanks and (2) coating for building purposes. As planned, this will apply to their manufacture and import from 1 January, 2023. Prohibitions of sales, storage, transport and use will apply from 1 July, 2023. (CL news) There are 49 specific chromium (6+) compounds listed as restricted substances.
Strontium chromate is a chromium (6+) compound, which functions as an effective corrosion prevention and inhibiting agent in coating. To relieve the industry, via this draft amendment, the new prohibitions on the manufacture, import, sales, storage, transport and use of all coatings containing strontium chromate at or above 0.1% limit are proposed to apply from January 1, 2025.
