South Korea Discloses Information on Over 250 New Chemicals Previously Claimed Confidential under K-REACH

On September 22, 2023, South Korea’s National Institute of Environment Research (NIER) made public the amendments to the hazard assessment results of new and existing chemical substances previously registered under K-REACH.

Updates to Annex 1 - New Chemical Substances Hazard Assessment Results

  • Disclose chemical names and CAS numbers of 257 new chemical substances previously registered under K-REACH as their CBI protection periods expired. *To protect CBI, South Korea allows enterprises to protect the confidentiality of the full chemical name of registered substances. Many substances under K-REACH are claimed confidential with only generic names disclosed. As the period of CBI protection has expired or the CBI approval has been revoked, the authority intends to disclose chemical information of these substances.

  • Delete one new chemical substance (Given No. 2017-946) since it has already been listed in Annex 2 with “KE No. 2013-3-5644”.

Updates to Annex 2 - Existing Chemical Substances Hazard Assessment Results

  • Add hazard assessment results of 19 existing chemical substances (Given No. 2023-339 ~ 2023-357), all of which are found toxic.

  • Update information of 2 previously registered existing chemical substances (Given No. 2021-133 and 2022-337), which are found toxic, designating them with NIER Given No. 2022-1-1103 and 2023-1-1113.

Details about the updated hazard assessment results can be accessed in the official circular - "NIER Announcement No. 2023-56".
