South Korea Requires Downstream Information of Registered New Chemicals

The OSHA requires new chemical registrants to submit downstream information by Nov 22nd, 2019. Priority targets are registered new chemicals suspected as being carcinogenic or posing other serious health risks.

South Korea’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) under the Ministry of Employment and Labor (MOEL) announced on Nov 4th, 2019 the opening of an investigation into downstream links of new chemicals registered under the Occupational Safety and Health Act (K-OSHA).

According to K-OSHA Article 40, the authority may order registrants (manufacturers/importers) of the new chemical substances suspected as carcinogens or of causing other serious health issues to make an investigation into the downstream links in the supply chain.

Enterprises that have already received notice from the authority are priority targets and must provide relevant materials to the OSHA before Nov 22nd, including new chemical name, concentration of the new chemical in products, downstream users/processors info, volume, uses in downstream links, etc. A view of the downstream links is important for the authority to address the risks and take necessary measures to prevent damage to human health.
