Global Chemical Regulation Highlights | June 2026
In June of 2026, China proposed major revisions to new chemical substance registration rules, while Taiwan expanded its import ban on mercury-containing products. In the EU, Commission Regulation (EU) 2026/1168 refined REACH microplastic restrictions and ECHA advanced work on C&L inventory disclosure and animal testing alternatives. In the USA, Rhode Island amended its consumer PFAS ban and EPA advanced TSCA risk evaluations for five high-priority chemicals. Other notable updates included Japan adding 40 substances to its carcinogenic substances list, South Korea updating multiple chemical control measures, Australia expanding IChEMS restrictions, and Canada finalizing CEPA assessments for titanium-containing and other substance groups.

South Korea Announces 74 New Chemicals Assessed under OSHA
On June 30, 2026, South Korea's Ministry of Employment and Labor (MoEL) announced the hazard and risk assessment results for 74 new chemical substances manufactured or imported during the first quarter of 2026. The announcement highlighted that 43 of these new chemical substances registered under K-OSHA pose significant health and safety hazards, prompting the issuance of mandatory workplace safety measures to protect industry workers.

Taiwan Expands Import Ban on Mercury-Containing Products
On June 22, 2026, the Taiwan Ministry of Environment (MOENV) issued an amendment to the Restrictions on the Import of Mercury-Containing Products. Effective July 1, 2026, the amendment expands the scope of prohibited mercury-containing products and establishes a phased prohibition schedule running from 2026 through 2028. This move aims to systematically phase out mercury-containing products across Taiwan, aligning its policy with the Minamata Convention on Mercury.
