China Unveils Ecological and Environmental Code: Key Impacts on the Chemical Industry

China has officially adopted the Ecological and Environmental Code, a comprehensive and stricter unified environmental legal framework that will take effect on August 15, 2026, significantly tightening compliance requirements for the chemical industry and other sectors.
On March 12, 2026, the 14th National People's Congress officially adopted the Ecological and Environmental Code of the People's Republic of China. This milestone legislation marks the beginning of a codified era for China's environmental protection framework. The new Code, which systematically integrates and standardizes existing environmental regulations, will officially take effect on August 15, 2026, simultaneously replacing and repealing the following 10 existing individual environmental laws:
