Korea Adjusts Authorities’ Chemical Management Responsibility

By MoE Ordinance No. 1086 and MoE Ordinance No. 1084, South Korea’s Ministry of Environment (MoE) announced the amendments K-REACH Enforcement Rules and K-CCA Enforcement Rules, prescribing the adjustments of certain authorities’ chemical management responsibilities under K-REACH and K-CCA.

In order to promote efficient chemical management and chemical accident prevention/response, starting from April 30, 2024, the following responsibilities will be transferred from the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) to the National Institute of Chemical Safety (NICS):

  • Chemical registration/notification application review;

  • Hazard assessment and evaluation;

  • Toxic substances designation; and

  • Update of GHS Classification List.

The NICS will also be responsible for making public the latest updates pertaining to the abovementioned chemical management work.
