To align with the update of new chemical registration tonnage band under K-REACH (from 0.1 t/y to 1 t/y; CL news), South Korea’s MoE is considering revising K-REACH Enforcement Decree to accordingly update the designation criterion (from 1 t/y to 10 t/y) for the possible registration of low volume new substances. A public consultation on this proposal was opened on May 22, 2024. Comments are welcome before July 1, 2024.
According to K-REACH, new substance below the registration tonnage band is not subject to registration, however, if its manufacturing or importing volume across the country is equal or over a specific criterion (current: 1 t/y), it may be designated by the MoE and publicly announced for the new chemical registration. As the updated new chemical registration tonnage band (i.e., 1 t/y) is to be in force on January 1, 2025, the MoE is now soliciting public comments on changing the designation criterion from 1 t/y to 10 t/y for possible registration. Once adopted, the proposal is expected to take effect from 2025.
