South Korea Issues 322 New Chemical Substances Registered under OSHA

On 24 Mar, South Korea’s MoEL issued 322 new chemical substances registered under Korea OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Act) in the year of 2016, of which 81 substance are classified as “acute toxicity” or “reproductive toxicity”. The list is accessible here (MoEL Announcement No. 2017-139).

Substance hazards and the corresponding protective measures to guarantee worker safety were provided for public reference as well. For example, protective glasses and masks should be provided for workers with possible exposure to harmful gases, steam or dust. Proper ventilation is also a necessity in dusty working areas.

In South Korea, companies should register new chemical substances under both K-REACH and OSHA prior to manufacture or import activities. K-REACH covers all new chemical substances regardless of quantities while under OSHA new substances<0.1t/y are exempt from registration. In addition, data submission requirements for new chemical substances < 1t/y vary a lot between OSHA and K-REACH.

The lists of new substances registered under K-REACH were issued in batches by South Korea’s MoE (competent authority for K-REACH implementation) associated with hazard evaluation results. The previous updates have been monitored and reported by ChemLinked (CL news).
