South Korea Offers Support to Industry for K-REACH Registration

On June 27, 2023, South Korean Ministry of Environment (MoE) issued two lists of chemical substances that enjoy government supporting programs, aiming to help the industry complete chemical registration under K-REACH in a timely manner.

A registration consortium meeting the following conditions can apply for the government supports:

  • Production/import quantity: 100 t/y ~ 1000 t/y;

  • Intending to complete registration by November 2024, or having pre-registration completed;

  • Having its only representatives (OR) selected and including two or more SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises).

Government Supporting Programs

1. Financial support for preparation of testing data (targeting 60 hazardous substances)

  • For testing data obtained from the domestic GLP testing institutes, the MoE can support for 100% of the cost.

  • For testing data obtained from alternatives to animal testing methods, the MoE can support for 85% to 95% of the total cost.

  • For testing data obtained from general testing methods, the MoE can support for 60% to 70% of the total cost.

South Korea is making efforts to promote non-animal testing as more and more alternatives to animal testing methods have been incorporated in the Guide on Testing Methods of Chemicals (CL news). This supporting program also shows South Korea’s strong commitment in this regard. For details about the targeted 60 hazardous chemicals, please refer to List 1 (see Page 3 ~ 17).

2. Support for registration consultation costs (targeting 78 existing chemical substances)

For the targeted 78 substances in List 2 (see Page 2 ~ 4), the MoE can support part of the consultation costs for joint registration according to the maximum of registration tonnage. That is, a fixed amount of financial support will be provided for the registration consortium according to the maximum of registration tonnage.
