South Korea: Toxic Chemical Substance List Updated with GHS Classification

1. Four substances have been added to the South Korea’s Toxic Chemical Substance List (TCSL) and GHS Classification List. 2. Two substances have been added to the South Korea’s Observational Chemical Substances List (OCSL).

On 6 Aug 2014, South Korea’s National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) announced by NIER Notice No.2014-21 that two substances have been added to the South Korea’s Toxic Chemical Substance List (TCSL) and GHS Classification list. In addition, on the same date, two substances were added to the country’s Observational Chemical Substances List (OCSL) by NIER Notice No.2014-22.

The substances newly added into the TCSL and OCSL shall comply with TCCA one month after the publication of NIER Notice No.2014-21. For the GHS Classification list, changes are effective immediately after issuance of the NIER Notice No.2014-22. The details of the three updated inventories are summarized in Table 1 and Table 2 as below.

South Korea has adopted GHS since 2008. A grace period was given until 30 June 2010 for single substances, and 30 June 2013 for mixtures. So at present, not only single toxic substances but also mixtures should comply with Korea GHS.
