South Korea to Publish WoE Guidelines for All Toxicity Endpoints by 2027
May 10, 2022
NIER will invest KRW 4.2 billion in five years (2022-2026) in production and verification of alternative data for all existing toxicity endpoints, and publish corresponding WoE guidelines and checklist by 2027, starting from the reproductive toxicity.

17,263 Substances Pre-registered under Korea REACH

On March 31, 2022, South Korea's Ministry of Environment (MoE) published the updated list of pre-registered substances under K-REACH. So far, a total of 212,992 pre-registration applications were submitted for 17,263 chemical substances, of which 76 are CMR substances. About 9% of the pre-registered substances are manufactured or imported over 1,000 tonnes per year.

Updated New Chemical Substances Hazard Assessment Results under K-REACH

On April 27, 2022, South Korea’s National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) issued NIER Announcement No.2022-17, making public the amendments to the hazard assessment results of new chemical substances registered under K-REACH, which came into effect immediately.

South Korea Announces Updates to Priority Management Chemicals under K-REACH, 162 Substances Added and 4 Removed

South Korea newly designated 54 types of chemicals (in total 162 substances) subject to priority management. They are confirmed to have hazard of endocrine disorder, PBT, vPvB, or CMR corresponding to designation criteria under K-REACH.

South Korea to Update Toxic Substances List and GHS Classification List

On April 18, 2022, South Korea’s National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) issued two notices (NIER Announcement No.2022-158 and NIER Announcement No.2022-159), seeking public comments on the amendments to the Toxic Chemical Substances List (TCSL) and the GHS Classification List. The consultations will end on May 9, 2022.

South Korea Simplifies Data Requirements under K-REACH

On March 15, 2022, the South Korean Ministry of Environment (MoE) issued an announcement to bring forward the implementation of some rules that were proposed in the amendments to K-REACH Enforcement Rules. South Korea simplified data requirements for registration and exemption confirmation under K-REACH with certain conditions.

Updated Existing Chemical Hazard Assessment Results Under K-REACH

On February 11, 2022, the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) issued NIER Announcement No.2022-10, making public the hazard evaluation results of 30 existing chemical substances (Given number as 2022-170~2022-199) that were registered and reviewed under K-REACH from January to March 2021. 28 of these substances are toxic.

South Korea Proposes to Add Ten Substances to the Authorization List
Jan 17, 2022
South Korea is now consulting on adding ten substances to the Authorization List. The consultation will end by January 20, 2022. Once on the list, companies will need to obtain authorization before the “sunset date” to continue manufacturing, importing or using them.

K-REACH: Deadline for Registration Exemption Applications is Approaching
Nov 17, 2021
Applications for registration exemption confirmation of chemical substances ≥1000 t/a or CMRs ≥ 1 t/a shall be submitted before December 24, 2021.
