South Korea Passes New Biocides Law (K-BPR)
Dec 01, 2017
South Korea’s Cabinet passed a new biocides law named K-BPR in Aug of 2017, which is still awaiting final approval from the National Assembly. If approved it will come into force on January 1, 2019. Manufacturers or importers should submit relevant documents to the Authority in order to avail of the grace period before practical implementation of the regulation.

K-REACH: Data Requirements Reduction for Certain Chemicals

Beginning June 2018, South Korea plans to reduce the data requirements for 3 types of chemicals to ease the registration burden for industry. The data requirements for the 1st batch of 510 priority existing chemicals (PECs) will remain unchanged.

Seven priority existing chemical substances (PECs) subject to K-REACH joint registration recently finished LR (lead registrant) election. So far LR election has been completed for 330 PECs. 20 LRs have submitted dossiers, of which 10 have been approved by the authority and obtained a registration No.

K-REACH: 323 PECs Finished LR Election

Five priority existing chemical substances (PECs) subject to K-REACH joint registration recently finished LR (lead registrant) election. Three PECs that previously finished LR election were deleted. So far LR election has been completed for 323 PECs. 16 LRs have submitted dossiers, of which 8 have been approved and obtained a registration No.

South Korea’s MoE Updates Safety and Labeling Standards for Risk Concerned Products

Lists of approved biocidal active substances with corresponding percentage threshold are provided for spray cleaners, air fresheners and deodorants Risk concerned products should conduct product testing in 8 qualified labs every three years to verify compliance with the safety standards. Five products are newly designated by MoE as risk concerned products, e.g., windshield washer fluids for automobiles, engine antifreeze coolants, dehumidifying agent for home use, etc. Timetable for full compliance with the updated safety and labeling standards are specified.
