Korea Updates GHS Classification List, Targeting Chrysotile

The manufacture, import, sale, keeping/storage, transportation, and use of ‘chrysotile and mixtures containing 1% or more thereof’ are prohibited in South Korea.

On March 19, 2025, South Korea’s National Institute of Chemical Safety (NICS) released the NICS Announcement No. 2025-7 to make public the updates to the GHS Classification List. The updates target ‘Chrysotile (CAS No. 12001-29-5)’, removing it from the entry of Given No. 06-5-7 and integrate it into Given No. 06-4-27 as a supplementation. It took effect immediately.

Chrysotile was designated as a prohibited chemical on December 5, 2024 (Read more). The GHS Classification List shall be updated accordingly. However, the classification information, pictogram, signal words, hazard statements and UN No., etc. of ‘Chrysotile’ are not changed.

Given No. 06-4-27 now includes crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite asbestos, actinolite asbestos, tremolite asbestos, chrysotile and mixtures containing 1% or more thereof. Their manufacture, import, sale, keeping/storage, transportation, and use are prohibited in South Korea.
