South Korea Updates GHS Classification List

On 26 Aug 2016, South Korea’s National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) announced the updates of GHS Classification List by NIER Announcement No.2016-15. The updates, summarized below, are effective immediately.

(1) adding clear classification standard for substances corrosive to metals

(2) supplementing classification regarding substances hazardous to ozone layer

(3) revising UN No. and classification and labeling information after the review of domestic and foreign information.

The updates have been previously drafted and issued for public consultation by NIER Notice No.2016-226 on7 Jul 2016. The consultation period ended on 26 Jul 2016.

Through NIER Announcement No.2016-15, the GHS classification, labeling information or UN No. has been updated for

• 52 Toxic chemicals

• 2 Restricted chemicals

• 10 Prohibited chemicals

• 12 Accident precaution chemicals
