South Korea Updates GHS Classification List

13 new substances were designated as toxic chemical substances after hazard evaluation under K-REACH. Mandatory classification and labelling elements of these toxic substances were published.

On April 1, 2020, South Korea’s National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) announced the updates to the GHS Classification List by NIER Announcement No. 2020-8[1], which came into effect immediately.

The major updates are summarized as below.

  • Adding 13 toxic chemical substances (Given No.  2020-1-957~2020-1-969) with corresponding classification information, pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, M factors and UN No.

  • Updating the name or classification information of 4 toxic substances previously designated (Given No. 97-1-167, 2017-1-772, 2018-1-831, 2018-1-844)

The updates details are accessible here[2].

The 13 substances have been registered and found toxic after the hazard evaluation under K-REACH. They were newly added into the Toxic Chemical Substances List (TCSL) by NIER Announcement No.2020-7[3] on March 24, 2020 (CL news[4]). It should be noted that they are still considered new chemical substances in South Korea and require new chemical registration other than the original registrants.
