South Korea Updates GHS Classification List

Mandatory classification and labelling elements of toxic chemicals, restricted chemicals and accident precaution chemicals were published.

On July 12, 2021, South Korea’s National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) announced the updates to the GHS Classification List by NIER Announcement No. 2021-40[1], which came into effect immediately.

The updates are summarized as below.

  • Adding 19 chemical substances (Given No.  2021-1-1038 ~ 2021-1-1056) with corresponding classification information, pictograms, signal words, hazard statements, M factors and UN No., which were registered and designated as toxic chemical substances after the hazard evaluation under K-REACH in June of 2021 (CL news[2])

  • Updating the name or classification information of 38 toxic chemicals, 5 types of restricted chemicals and 5 accident precaution chemicals that were previously designated

It is mandatory to follow MoE’s GHS Classification List in preparation of MSDS and label of concerned hazardous substances. The list is dynamically updated by the NIER to incorporate more hazardous substances and provide corresponding classification and labelling information. So far, it contains 1,058 toxic substances, 13 types of restricted substances, 60 types of prohibited substances and 97 precautionary chemicals.
